Trips (three of a kind using one hole card and two on the board) is a strong, premium made hand that beats two pair and one pair. While powerful, trips are generally less disguised than a “set” (pocket pair matching one board card) and can be vulnerable to straights, flushes, or a higher kicker.

Key Aspects of Trip Strength:

  • Definition & Strength: Three cards of the same rank (e.g.,  on a  board). It is ranked above two pair and below a straight.
  • Trips vs. Sets: “Trips” (using one hole card) are easier for opponents to read because the board is paired, making them less profitable than a “set” (using two hole cards), which is well-disguised.
  • Kicker Dependency: If opponents also have trips, the higher kicker (the unmatched side card) wins.
  • Vulnerability: Although strong, trips are vulnerable on boards with potential straight or flush draws. A better kicker or a full house can easily beat them.
  • Actionable Advice: Generally, trips are very strong, but you must play cautiously if the board is paired and there is heavy action, as you might be facing a better set or a full house.
