Pocket Aces (AA), often referred to as “bullets” or “pocket rockets,” is the best starting hand in Texas Hold’em, boasting approximately an 80% equity lead against a single opponent. While they are the strongest pre-flop hand, improper play can lead to getting “cracked” (losing).

Key Strategy & Analysis

  • Pre-flop Objective: The main goal is to get as much money into the pot as possible, ideally, isolating one player.
  • Raise Big: Do not slow-play AA in most scenarios; make a large raise to build the pot and clear out smaller hands.
  • Multi-way Danger: The strength of Aces drops significantly as more players enter the pot. Against five players, the hand is roughly 50/50.
  • Post-flop Caution: Unimproved, Aces are still just one pair. If the board is very wet (e.g., connected cards, potential flushes) and the action is heavy, be aware that you might be behind.
  • When to Fold: While rarely folded pre-flop, you should be prepared to fold against an extremely tight/passive player who suddenly shows massive post-flop aggression on a dangerous board.

Common Mistakes

  • Too Much Slow-Playing: Letting too many players in, allowing them to hit a cheap two-pair or straight.
  • Getting Over-Attached: Refusing to fold when the board clearly beats one pair.
  • Ignoring Board Texture: Failing to realize that an Ace-high hand is weaker on a 7-8-9 board than on a 2-5-Q board.

Note: You will only be dealt pocket aces on average once every 221 hands.
